Teen rescued from rocks after tombstoning from cliffs

A rescue operation had to be launched after a teenager got trapped after tombstoning from Arbroath cliffs in Angus.

The teen was found clinging onto rocks after becoming stuck against an incoming tide.

Both Arbroath RNLI lifeboats were launched after the alarm was raised at around 5.40pm on Thursday.

Mobile units from HM Coastguard – Angus & Dundee also provided support.

The teen was found to be part of a group who had been tombstoning near Horseshoe Cave.

Inshore lifeboat ‘Robert Fergusson’ removed the casualty from the cliffs and transferred him to the all-weather lifeboat ’Inchcape’ for transit back to Arboath Harbour.

Once safely back on ground, he was taken into the care of the coastguard until paramedics arrived.

Alex Smith, lifeboat operations manager, said: “Thankfully our volunteer crews were able to attend the incident quickly and bring the casualty safely back to shore.

“It’s extremely important that people think about the possible dangers when involved in any activities in and around the sea.

“We want people to be in a position to make better, more informed choices to keep themselves and others safe.”
