Teenager charged over Dundee Halloween disorder after night of 'riots and mobbing'

A teenage boy has been charged after police were attacked during a night of disorder in Dundee earlier this week.

The windows of a school in the city’s Kirkton district were shattered and bricks were hurled at passing vehicles after fire crews responded to calls from Beauly Square shortly after 5.30pm on Monday.

Videos from nearby Keswick Terrace, Balgowan Avenue and a number of other streets circling on social media showed flames raging and burnt-out debris by the roadside.

In others, officers holding riot shields could be seen avoiding fireworks, while another showed the force helicopter deployed with the searchlight scanning the streets below.

It is unclear why the disorder started, however it is understood to have continued long into the night.

Police Scotland confirmed on Thursday that a 16-year-old boy had been arrested and charged.

It also revealed another 16-year-old boy has also been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with mobbing and rioting offences.

The force confirmed it was following several other positive lines of enquiry to identify others involved, with regular patrols of the area to continue.

Chief superintendent Phil Davison, local policing commander for Tayside Division, said: “We know how distressing the disorder seen in Kirkton on Monday evening was for the local community.

“I want to reassure people that we are continuing to investigate a number of crimes committed during the evening and I fully expect others to be identified and charged as this work progresses.

“We have provided a highly visible police presence in the Kirkton area to provide a level of reassurance to local residents and this will continue in the coming days and into the weekend.

“I want to commend the local community for the resilience they have shown following this hugely disruptive and upsetting incident.

“We are fully committed to keeping people safe in the area and I would urge anyone with any information about the incident which has not yet been passed to police to call 101 or speak to any of our officers.”

Police have set up a website which will give members of the public access to a form to send information directly to the investigating officers anonymously.

Chief superintendent Davison added: “We would appeal to anyone with any information to use the portal link or contact 101.

“Anyone with any CCTV, dashcam or any other footage that they think would assist our enquiries can also send this via this link.”
