Three aircrafts targeted in last week by lasers on approach to Aberdeen airport as police hunt culprits

Aircrafts have been targeted by a laser as they approached an airport while coming in to land over the last week.

Police warned that the “reckless” behaviour put the lives of passengers and people on the ground at risk as it could result in “tragic circumstances” as pilots could become distracted or temporarily blinded at “what is a critical time of any flight”.

Over the last week, three aircrafts approaching Aberdeen International Airport were targeted by lasers.

A spokesperson for Aberdeen International Airport said: “Targeting an aircraft with a laser pen is a criminal offence and those convicted of doing so could face up to five years in prison.

“Incidents such as this are extremely dangerous and could lead to a catastrophic loss of life.

“Members of the public who witness or are aware of anyone conducting this type of incredibly reckless behaviour should contact Police Scotland immediately.”

Inspector Hamish King, based at Aberdeen International Airport, said: “Such behaviour is extremely dangerous and could lead to a tragic incident.

“Information we have so far suggests the laser was coming from the Northfield area of the city, possibly close to Auchmill Golf Course.

“Those responsible could be arrested and prosecuted, with the courts taking a serious view of such incidents. I would urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to please contact Police Scotland.”
