A train driver “could have been killed” after a traffic cone was thrown from a bridge, British Transport Police have said.
BTP issued a warning after the item was thrown from a bridge in Cove Bay on Saturday.
In photographs shared on Twitter, a train window could be seen boarded up after being smashed.
As a result of the incident, the Aberdeen to Montrose rail line was taken out of service.
BTP North Scotland said: “ScotRail service Aberdeen to Montrose was taken out of service today after a traffic cone was thrown from a bridge in Cove Bay.
“Luckily, no one was injured, but this reckless action could have seriously injured or killed the driver and risked the lives of everyone onboard.
“BTP Aberdeen are investigating and would encourage anyone with any information to contact police.”
