A person has died on the railway line between Aberdeen and Glasgow.

The tracks between Porlethen and Aberdeen were closed on Tuesday morning due to an emergency incident, causing major disruption to train services.

Officers and paramedics were called at around 6.24am to reports of a casualty on the track. British Transport Police said the person died at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious, police said.

Trains between Dundee and Arbroath were suspended, and services between Aberdeen and Glasgow Queen Street/Edinburgh were subject to cancellation and delay.

A ScotRail statement read: “Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Portlethen and Aberdeen.

“To allow them to safely access the railway and carry out their work, all lines running between these stations are currently closed. We’ll keep you updated.”

ScotRail said the train lines were reopened shortly after 9am.

British Transport Police said: “Officers were called at 6.24am today (May 28) to reports of a casualty on the tracks in Aberdeen.

“Officers and paramedics responded, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.”
