Tributes paid to Brechin motorcyclist who died at Ninewells Hospital after lorry crash in Angus

Tributes have been paid to a motorcyclist who died in hospital following a crash involving a lorry in Angus.

Darien Baird, from Brechin, was critically injured following the crash, which occured around 11.25am on July 24.

The 26-year-old was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee by ambulance, where he fought for his life on a ventilator, according to his sister.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that he had died in the early hours of July 26, two days after the collision.

His sister, Lani Baird, paid tribute on social media to her “baby brother” and the medical staff that cared for him.

She wrote: “Saying this with a heavy heart…

“My baby brother, Darien Baird, was involved in a motorbike accident on Monday, July 24 at 11.25am and rushed to hospital due to his critical condition.

“The staff at Ninewells ICU had done amazingly trying to support Darien, but also us as a family. I can’t thank you enough.

“He has spent the last two days fighting on a ventilator, however, Darien succumbed to his injuries and passed away at 4.53am this morning at the age of 26.

“He was surrounded by family and a close friend. I’m posting on here because many will have met and got to know him.

“My family really appreciate the kind messages received as we process the news…so thank you.”

The 47-year-old male driver of the Renault HGV did not require hospital treatment.

Sergeant Gordon Dickson, from Tayside Divisional Road Policing Unit, said on Wednesday: “Our thoughts are with Darien’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing and I would urge anyone with information which hasn’t yet been passed to police to contact 101 with reference number 1079 of July 24.”
