A warning has by issued by police after a video caught seal pups being chased into the sea in Fife.

Officers were alerted by concerned members of the public after seeing the footage shot in in the East Neuk area.

Police Scotland reminded people using the beach to be considerate of the wild animals, saying that chasing them could put them at risk of harm.

Fife’s wildlife crime liaison officer, Ben Pacholek, urged people to keep a “respectful” distance from any wild mammals and sea birds while at the beach.

“It is worth remembering that seals are semi-aquatic animals and the time they do spend on land is often important for them to sleep, conserve energy and digest food,” he said.

“Scotland’s seal population is a protected species and intentionally or recklessly disturbing seals when they are resting on land can be a criminal offence.”

Elouise Dalziel, the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Marine Policy Inclusion officer, said: “We are saddened to hear reports of a seal pup being chased into the sea in Fife.

“The UK is home to approximately 40% of the world’s grey seals and a significant number of harbour seals, with the majority of both populations in Scotland. It is therefore vital that these animals can find safety on our shores,” they said.

“We condemn the act of disturbing this seal and encourage anyone visiting Scotland’s coasts to follow the Outdoor Access and Marine Wildlife Watching codes. If you see someone disturbing a wild animal, please report the matter to the police.”
