A new true crime podcast hopes to bring “closure” to one of Scotland’s most notorious unsolved murders.
It comes 40 years after taxi driver George Murdoch was violently attacked with a cheese wire while on his way to pick up his last fare of the night in Aberdeen.
Ryan Ogilvie, owner of Mind the Gap Creative, has produced the series with the help of Mr Murdoch’s family.
“We speak with George’s nephew Alex McKay and his wife,” he told STV News.
” We also managed to speak with the police constable who was first on the scene after George was attacked.
Family handout“It came about when the family ran a commercial about the murder through our audio production company.
“I was familiar with the case and asked the family if they had thought about a podcast, which they agreed to.”
Having first started working on the podcast in March, Mr Ogilvie quickly learned that there was “much more to the case”.
The series was originally expected to run for three episodes but was extended to five.
“With the 40th anniversary, people who may have information may be getting older,” Mr Ogilvie said.
The story has captivated true crime fans for decades, however, Mr Ogilvie insists that “even people familiar with the story will get a lot from the podcast”.
The series also aims to bring the listeners closer to the personal side of the story in a “unique” way.
“We’ve hired actors and actresses to give a voice to Jesse and George,” the producer explained.
“To most people George Murdoch is just a name, but this will investigate who he was, and how it affected his family.
“Hopefully the podcast brings it to the front of people’s minds and highlights the hard work George’s family has done.
“Both the family and Police Scotland want to find justice. I just hope this can help to bring closure.”
Interest in the case has never ceased, with Police Scotland and the Murdoch family working hard to investigate new leads over the years.
Detective inspector James Callander, from the Police Scotland Major Investigation Team, previously told STV News: “It is apparent that many people will still have information that may help us bring closure to his family.”
Last year, police issued a fresh appeal to trace a man wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt who officers believe may be able to help the investigation.
After the appeal, Alex McKay, Mr Murdoch’s nephew, told STV News that he remains “absolutely convinced” the case will be solved.
The podcast will be available across multiple streaming platforms, with the first episode coming out on Friday, September 29.
