Woman, 71, 'stabbed' during early hours as suspect arrested

A suspect has been arrested after a woman was allegedly stabbed during the early hours of Tuesday morning in Montrose.

Emergency services were called to Market Street at around 12.40am following reports of a 71-year-old woman being seriously assaulted.

The woman was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment.

Officers have arrested a 21-year-old woman in connection with the alleged attack.

An investigation to establish the full circumstances is ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.40am on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, we received a report that a 71-year-old woman had been seriously assaulted in Market Street, Montrose.

“Emergency services attended and she was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment.

“A 21-year-old woman has been arrested.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
