Work begins to clear A9 landslide as roads remain closed after Storm Gerrit

Work is under way to fully clear a landslide on the A9 that caused roads to be closed due to the effects of Storm Gerrit.

A major incident was declared on Wednesday and roads closed for hours as heavy rainfall, high winds and blizzard conditions caused disruption for drivers in the north and north-east of the country.

The A9 was brought to a standstill amid snowy conditions with gritters and ploughs aiming to get drivers moving.

The road at Drumochter reopened on Wednesday evening but with a warning for travelled to use extra caution.

People travelling have been warned that they are likely to face disruption as a result of the storm.

The road also reopened at Dalnaspidal in both directions after it had been closed during the day due to adverse weather conditions.

Traffic Scotland alerted road users to an obstruction blocking the carriageway on the A9 at Scrabster that left the route closed overnight.

A safety assessment, according to BEAR Scotland, was to be conducted at first light on Thursday after a landslide caused both lanes to be shut.

Work to clear the debris from the road took place throughout Thursday morning, with ferry passengers at Scrabster terminal also affected by the disruption albeit with ‘minimal delays’.

BEAR Scotland released images of the road being cleared as one lane was reopened at around 8.30am on Thursday morning with traffic control in the area.

Now the section of the A9 is open in both directions but drivers are being urged to take care with traffic measures still in place.
