A worker who suffered serious injuries when a silo containing chemicals exploded at his workplace in Aberdeenshire says he’s been left with “no sense of closure” after the company was fined.
Tetra Technologies UK Limited was fined £350,000 at Peterhead Sheriff Court on Wednesday over the workplace accident on June 21, 2023.
The company admitted it had failed to comply with health and safety regulations.
Philip Moir suffered multiple broken bones and chemical burns when the silo burst at the site in Peterhead.
Around 3,000 barrels of calcium chloride brine exploded from the container, which is often used in the oil and gas drilling process.
Four others were treated at the scene, while Mr Moir was taken to hospital for treatment.
Following Wednesday’s outcome, Mr Moir said his future remains “uncertain” almost three years on from the incident.
In a statement released through law firm Digby Brown, Mr Moir said: “This gives me no sense of closure, Tetra had a duty to make sure everything was safe and clearly it wasn’t.
“It’s honestly a miracle I wasn’t killed when the silo burst – three years on, and I’m still dealing with the effects of multiple broken bones and chemical burns.
“Not only have I lost my career, but everything I planned for the future is now uncertain.
“This has been truly life-changing in the worst way imaginable, but I want to thank everyone who has supported me and request the media respect my privacy as I continue my recovery.”
Tetra Technologies UK Limited has been contacted for comment.
