A would-be car thief, who stabbed a man with a screwdriver on his driveway in Aberdeen, has died in prison.

Ryan Coutts attempted to steal the car outside the victim’s home in the city on October 13, 2018.

Coutts, who was 29 at the time of the incident, punched the owner, who had confronted him, several times in the head and then threatened to “cut” and “stab” him.

The victim suffered stab injuries to the neck, chin, lower lip and abdomen.

Coutts was initially charged with attempted murder but admitted to the reduced charge of assaulting the man to his permanent disfigurement and danger of his life at the High Court in Glasgow in October 2019.

He also pleaded guilty to attempting to steal his car and was jailed for four years.

Ryan Coutts died at HMP Addiewell aged 36 on July 11.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual. 

“Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland are advised, and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. Fatal Accident Inquiries are held in due course.”
