A teenage footballer has lost both of his legs following a car crash that left three others in hospital in Aberdeenshire.
Adam Golebiewski was one of four teenagers injured in a crash on Union Road, Macduff on the morning of Sunday, September 8.
The 17-year-old had to have both of his legs amputated below the knee due to the severity of his injuries and is facing three months of rehabilitation.
Adam’s teammate, Curtis West, was also badly injured in the crash and required surgery on his back.
A fundraiser has been launched to help both families cope with the changes ahead.
Speaking to STV News, Adam’s dad – also named Adam – said the pair had been out celebrating after his son made a “world-class” save that helped his team, Deveronside JFC, win a match on Saturday.
The pair both played as goalkeepers for local teams Deveronside JFC and Whitehills Football Club as well as working together as apprentices for a local building company.
He said the weeks since the crash have been hard but that his son is “upbeat” despite the injuries.
“He’s just had to have another surgery on his right leg, so he has another week in hospital before he’s going to Woodend Hospital for three months,” he said.
Mr Golebiewski added that his son, who will turn 18 next week, is looking forward to starting the recovery process.
“He worked so hard at his job and football. He will do something in sport, there’s no doubt about it.”
Following the incident, Adam’s team shared a statement on social media offering support for the team.
“After Saturdays win at Nairn, and his own fantastic performance, our young goalkeeper Adam Golebiewski was in a car accident and suffered very serious injuries,” they wrote.
“Everyone at the Club wishes Adam well with his recovery and rehabilitation and assures him he has the full support of the Club going forward. Take care and all the best Adam.”
Curtis’s club, Whitehills Football Club, also shared a statement in support of the 18-year-old, they wrote: “Unfortunately, Curtis was involved in a car accident last weekend and has sustained a back injury. Our thoughts are with him during this challenging time.
“We want to extend our heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery, Curtis! We look forward to seeing you back at the Hills when you are fit and ready.”
A GoFundMe fundraiser for the pair has since been launched to help the families adjust with over £7,929 raised of its £10,000 target.
Organiser, Angela Quinn said the funds will help Adam’s family with adjustments to their home to accommodate him.
Mr Golebiewski said the family had been worried about affording a new shower on the ground floor of their house for Adam.
“It’s just unbelievable. We were panicking about getting a shower and stuff to help him, but we’re going to be able to get it done, people have been so generous,” he added.
Police Scotland said enquiries into the crash are “ongoing” and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
