SNP rebel Fergus Ewing facing possible suspension over Lorna Slater vote

Fergus Ewing has repeatedly rebelled against the Scottish Government on a number of issues.

Fergus Ewing faces disciplinary action by SNP over Lorna Slater no-confidence voteScottish Parliament

Fergus Ewing could be suspended from the SNP after MSPs were told the party would meet to discuss disciplinary action against the former minister.

The Inverness and Nairn politician is facing action after voting against Scottish Government minister and Green MSP Lorna Slater in a no-confidence vote.

Disciplinary measures against Ewing at the time were delayed following the death of his mother Winnie – an SNP stalwart.

STV News understands the meeting will now take place on Wednesday.

Party MSPs have been told while attendance at the meeting is compulsory they will be given a free vote.

Ewing has rebelled against the SNP on several occasions, including on Wednesday’s vote to delay the Scottish Government’s new licensing scheme for short-term lets.

He has also criticised his party on its gender recognition reforms – which he voted against – as well as Highly Protected Marine Areas and the dualling of the A9.

And he has attacked the Greens – who are in Government with the SNP – as “wine-bar revolutionaries”.

He has called for a new vote on whether to continue with the Bute House Agreement – the deal the SNP struck with the Greens and saw the party enter government.

The SNP would not comment on the possible action against Ewing but said disciplinary action is an internal party matter.
