Island communities ‘failed’ by SNP amid ongoing ferry disruption – Cole-Hamilton

The SNP has “completely failed” Scotland’s island and coastal communities, Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has said.

A statement from ferry operator CalMac on Thursday said services had been “significantly disrupted” in some areas, including services to Arran and Mull, due to mechanical issues with vessels.

The statement indicated Arran had no major vessels currently in service, with Islay operating with one vessel to the island.

Barra and South Uist are sharing one vessel, meaning they have a reduced service.

Mr Cole-Hamilton spoke to the Press Association on Friday during an election campaign stop which saw him take a speedboat ride down the River Clyde in Glasgow.

He said: “The SNP have completely failed our island communities and our coastal communities as well, and left them high and dry.

“We would bring in a ferries Bill, which would see a 30-year procurement programme which involves communities and recognises that our ferry fleet is aging and our communities absolutely rely on these boats.”

Mr Cole-Hamilton also said his party will not put a “limit on our ambitions” in the May election.

He said: “We’re really excited about this campaign. For the first time in a long time, the Lib Dems have been beating the SNP in seats across Scotland.

“But wherever you are, we’re poised to take seats on that regional ballot, that second peach coloured vote, which you can send Lib Dems to Parliament who will act for you and your community.”

CalMac chief executive Duncan Mackison said on Thursday: “We’re working hard to restore services and get vessels back into action as quickly as we can.”

The SNP have been approached for comment.
