Jeremy Corbyn launches new left-wing political party

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has officially launched his new UK political party called “Your Party”.

The independent MP previously said his party would “build a real alternative” to the Labour Party.

“It’s time for a new kind of political party. One that is rooted in our communities, trade union and social movements,” Corbyn’s statement said.

“One that builds power in all regions and nation. One that belongs to you.”

Corbyn’s Your Party will be holding an inaugural conference in the near future, he said.

He said attendees and supporters will decide the direction of the party, the model of leadership, and its policies.

“Real change is coming,” Corbyn said.

Outlining his party’s platform, Corbyn said the UK will only fix the crises in society “with a mass redistribution of wealth and power”, which he said means taxing the “very richest in our society”.

Your Party would also keep the NHS free from privatisation, while bringing energy, water, rail, and mail into public ownership.

He said fixing the nation’s problems also means “investing in a massive council-house building programme” and “standing up to fossil fuel giants putting their profits before our planet”.

Corbyn’s party will continue to demand “a free and independent Palestine”.

“Now, more than ever, we must defend the right to protest against genocide,” Corbyn’s announcement said.

“We believe in the radical idea that all human life has equal value. That is why we will keep demanding an end to all arms sales to Israel, and for the only path to peace: a free and independent Palestine.”

Earlier this month, former Labour MP Zarah Sultana quit Keir Starmer’s party and vowed to join in launching Corbyn’s new political party.

The Peace and Justice Project, a non-profit organisation founded by Corbyn, is organising a consultation to shape the party’s policies.

It said public responses will be taken alongside those of campaign groups, community campaigners, trade unionists and independent councillors.
