John Swinney faces first FMQs since announcing £500m budget cuts

The First Minister will face a grilling over his decision to cut cash for public services this week.

John Swinney is answering his first FMQs since the Scottish Parliament returned this week from its summer recess.

The First Minister will face questions from MSPs after announcing £500m worth of cuts to public services on Tuesday.

The SNP leader will likely face a grilling over the cuts which he said would come from all government departments, including health.

On Wednesday, he set out his government’s spending plans for the year ahead.

Those included a commitment to continue £1bn a year on childcare and £600m on affordable housing.

But he was criticised by some for shelving previous manifesto commitments to expand universal free school meals to all primary pupils.

Swinney said his number one priority was eliminating child poverty but criticised the UK Government’s funding settlement for Holyrood.
