John Swinney is set to face MSPs in the chamber at Holyrood on Thursday at First Minister’s Questions, as pressure mounts for the SNP to launch a probe into Peter Murrell’s embezzlement of party finances.
Murrell, who is the estranged husband of former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, was remanded in custody on Monday after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP over a 12-year period.
The 61-year-old used the money to buy numerous items – including a motorhome and luxury goods – and towards the purchase of two cars.
Following Murrell’s guilty plea, the First Minister described his actions as a “terrible breach of trust and an overwhelming betrayal”.
However, he stopped short of calling for an independent inquiry into Murrell’s crimes.
Swinney is likely to face questions over the decisions when MSPs gather in the chamber at Holyrood from noon.
