Keir Starmer has been mocked online for celebrating Burns Nights with a can of Irn Bru and a small tray of Tunnock’s treats.
The image has since been mocked on social media for being “inauthentic” and “patronising”.
On Sunday evening, the Prime Minister posted a message on social media to “those in Scotland and around the world” celebrating the life and legacy of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns.
Starmer posted a photo of himself celebrating Burns Night with an unopened can of Irn Bru, a sandwich, and a tray of Tunnocks treats, including teacakes, caramel logs and caramel wafers.
Burns Night is a celebration of Scottish culture, and Burns Supper typically features a hearty plate of haggis, neeps and tatties, washed down with a nip of whisky.

“I don’t recall Robert Burns writing an ode to Irn Bru or Tunnocks Teacakes. Inauthentic and patronising,” one woman wrote.
SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn tweeted: “That is, without doubt, the most miserable Burns Supper I’ve ever seen.
“They didn’t even give him a Jimmy Hat or get Nessie in the background. CAN THEY DO NOTHING RIGHT.”
The No Farmers, No Food campaign posted: “This is just cringeworthy. Here is a photo posted by Keir Starmer on Facebook and Instagram in a patronising cosplay display of Scottishness with some Tunnock’s and Irn Bru. It’s so lame and insincere. And the can of Irn Bru hasn’t even been opened.”
Another comment on Instagram said: “Did [Starmer] use ChatGPT to design ‘something Scottish’?! Only thing missing is a kid with ginger hair, some tartan and nessie.”
