Liz Truss has been urged to stand down by members of her own party, with a motion of no confidence in her leadership having been submitted.
The Prime Minister has faced a tumultuous start to her premiership, having been appointed just over a month ago.
During that time, the Government’s mini-budget has been largely reversed after major U-turns on abolishing the 45p tax rate for higher earners and scrapping the planned increase in corporation tax.
On Friday, Kwasi Kwarteng was sacked as chancellor as Truss sought to steady the markets, with Jeremy Hunt named as his successor.
Three Conservative MPs have now publicly called for the Prime Minister to resign, among discontent among the party.
Former minister Crispin Blunt said the “game is up” for Truss, while Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen also criticised her leadership.
Jamie Wallis, who represents the Bridgend constituency, has now called on Truss to stand down as leader of the Conservatives.
“In recent weeks, I have watched as the Government has undermined Britain’s economic credibility and fractured our party irreparably,” said Wallis.
“Enough is enough. I have written to the Prime Minister to ask her to stand down as she no longer holds the confidence of this country.”
In a letter published on social media, Wallis explained that Truss has made “very basic and avoidable errors” in her approach.
They also criticised Truss for failing to challenge the behaviour of Conservative colleagues towards transgender people during the leadership contest.
“Mistakes can be undone, and as one united team I believe we could achieve almost anything,” said the MP.
“However, whilst you are our leader, I no longer believe this is possible.
“The leadership contest, the appointments you made to government, the way in which your senior people manage their MPs, the way in which you have allowed our Welsh colleagues to be undermined through your decision to appoint an English MP as Secretary of State for Wales despite having the most ever Welsh Conservative MPs, and your handling of the press have convinced me that we could never be a united team whilst you are leader.
“Therefore, I ask you to stand down as Prime Minister as I believe you no longer hold the confidence of the country or the parliamentary party.
“It is the right thing to do to ensure the stability, security and prosperity of the people to whom we owe everything.”
The SNPs’ depute leader Kirsten Oswald urged Conservative MPs in Scotland to call for Truss’ resignation.
“The game is up, Liz Truss has to go,” said the SNP MP.
“The Prime Minister has driven the UK to the brink of a recession and left the housing market on the verge of crashing all within weeks of taking office.
“Sacking her incompetent chancellor won’t cut it – Liz Truss must walk or be removed from office.”
She added: “It is now vital that more Tory MPs, and Tory MPs in Scotland, call for her resignation and bring this shambolic premiership to an end.”
