A debate will be held in the Scottish Parliament with MSPs arguing whether to pursue action over concerns about how Donald Trump acquired his golf resorts.
On Wednesday, Scottish Greens co-convenor Patrick Harvie will bring forward the proposal to seek an Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO) to investigate the former US president’s finances.
The vote would not be binding but it would increase pressure on ministers to apply to the Court of Session and act on concerns over how Trump came into possession of both his Turnberry resort in Ayrshire and his property in Aberdeenshire.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Greens said: “There are serious questions around the legality of Donald Trump’s investments in Scotland, made all the more urgent following the recent publication of his tax records in the US.
“Now the election is over it’s time for answers. Scotland must have a zero tolerance approach to financial crime, regardless of the suspect.”
Harvie has repeatedly called for Trump’s financial affairs to be considered.
In January, speaking at Holyrood, Harvie said: “As well as protecting Scotland from this particular threat, which Donald Trump helped cultivate, we also need to protect Scotland’s good name from association with the toxic Trump brand itself.
“The Trump Organisation has been accused of repeatedly reporting fraudulent financial details to the US Office of Government Ethics, while reporting a different set of figures to UK regulators in respect of the Trump golf courses here in Scotland.”
Last year, the Trump’s son Eric called Harvie “an irrelevant and spineless politician”.
Eric Trump, a trustee and executive vice-president of the Trump Organisation, demanded Harvie “retract his libellous statements”.
The Trump Organisation has been approached for comment.
