Keir Starmer to face PMQs ahead of Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs

Businesses will be hit by a new round of US trade tariffs on Wednesday afternoon.

The Prime Minister will be questioned by opposition leaders hours before US President Donald Trump is expected to unveil a new round of US trade tariffs on Wednesday afternoon.

US-UK trade talks have been the subject of much discussion and speculations as Wednesday approaches, and it’s likely to come up at PMQs.

As part of what Trump is calling “Liberation Day”, the US President is expected to announce a set of sweeping tariffs that could hit every product imported to the US from every country around the world.

It seems that the UK will be no exception.

Although the US-UK trade talks have been ongoing, Starmer has so far failed to secure a deal for Britain, and on Monday, the prime minister’s official spokesman said the discussions were likely continue beyond the US deadline.

Starmer has previously advocated for a calm approach rather than a “knee-jerk reaction”. The Government has not ruled out retaliatory tariffs, but neither has it confirmed what they might look like.

The Prime Minister will likely be questioned about the UK’s response to the US tariffs and about the potential impact on the nation’s already struggling economy alongside of other domestic issues about the economy and education.
