MSPs have unanimously backed the principles of a Bill to make civil partnerships available to mixed sex couples.
Currently, same sex couples can marry and enter into a civil partnership, with mixed sex couples having access to the former only.
However, politicians backed the Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill at stage one on Tuesday.
At the end of March, the Equalities and Human Rights Committee confirmed its support for the Bill, concluding it would bolster equality in Scotland.
Convener Ruth Maguire said at the time that the committee backed the Scottish Government’s “aim of advancing human rights and equality” by extending civil partnerships to different sex couples.
