Police have been carrying out additional patrols around synagogues and other Jewish venues in Scotland following a terror attack in Manchester.

Police Scotland said the dedicated patrols were already in place as part of its existing plan for the Jewish High Holy Days, but that the community should remain “alert and vigilant”.

Two members of the Jewish community died and four others were seriously injured in the incident at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue at around 9.30am on Thursday.

A car was deliberately driven at members of the public before the driver of the car attacked people with a knife. He was wearing a vest which had the appearance of an explosive device, Greater Manchester Police said.

The suspect was shot and killed by police within seven minutes of the initial call. Two others have been arrested in connection.

Police Scotland said there is “no intelligence” to suggest any specific threat to the Jewish community in Scotland but advised vigilance.

A spokesperson said: “Police Scotland officers are already carrying out additional and dedicated patrols around synagogues and other Jewish venues as part of our existing policing plan for the Jewish High Holy Days.

“Following the incident, we are actively communicating with faith leaders and community leaders.

“While there is no intelligence to suggest any specific threat in Scotland, people should remain alert but not alarmed. You should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Police Scotland.

“Policing in Scotland has strong relationships with the public and we are grateful for the ongoing support of all our communities.”
