Alister Jack MP has said politicians “should be complimented for listening” following the UK Government’s U-turn on tax rates for higher earners.
In an interview with STV News, Jack said the party’s plan was to take care of the country’s most vulnerable.
He indicated that he would contribute to the matter of a benefits increase in line with inflation “when asked” in Cabinet.
Kathryn Samson, STV’s Westminster correspondent, also asked the Conservative MP if he was “happy to see the U-turn on the top rate of tax”.
“Well, you know, politicians are often criticised for not listening,” Jack responded.
“And then, when they do listen, they should be complimented.”
On Monday, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng announced the Government would ditch its plan to abolish the 45p tax rate for higher earners, set out in the mini budget.
The Prime Minister and Kwarteng have claimed that the plans to axe the rate had become a “distraction” from other policies being delivered.
Truss has since also been urged to commit to an increase in benefits in line with inflation.
