Bear Scotland launches competition to name fleet of winter road gritters

The public is being invited to come up with creative winter-themed names for a gritter fleet.

The competition, launched by BEAR Scotland, is inviting Scots to name its fleet of 115 gritters which serve the south east and north west trunk road networks.

Previous competitions have produced memorable snowy pun names including Snow Scotland Snow Party, I’ve Grit A Crush On You, Basil Salty, Gritty Gritty Bang Bang, Sir Andy Flurry and Brine Freeeeze.

There is also one named after STV meteorologist Sean Batty – called Thawin’ Batty.

The gritters treat roads ahead of frost and ice, and clear snow during the winter months.

Mike Smart, BEAR Scotland’s south east severe weather manager, said: “Our gritter naming competitions always capture the imagination of communities across Scotland and we’re looking forward to seeing what creative suggestions people come up with this year.

“Our winter fleet plays a vital role in helping keep trunk roads safe and operational during challenging weather conditions, and these names help bring a bit of fun and personality to the vehicles as they go about their important work.”

Entries can be submitted on BEAR Scotland’s website through an online form.

The contest is open until Friday, September 11.
