Chelsea Clinton has thanked Scotland for its ‘leadership’ after becoming the first country in the world to offer universal access to sanitary products.
The daughter of former US President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, made the remarks on Twitter following the news New Zealand has launched free sanitary products in schools.
In 2020, Scotland became the first country in the world to offer sanitary products to all after MSPs unanimously voted to pass the landmark Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill.
The introduction of the bill, passed in November, aims to tackle period poverty, as well as address the stigma and taboo which has traditionally surrounded menstruation.
Prior to the legislation, sanitary products were available for free at schools, colleges and universities across the country.
On Friday Clinton, a global health advocate, tweeted: “New Zealand ensuring sanitary products are free in schools is great news.
“As ever, thank you to Scotland for your leadership in tackling period poverty.”
