Coastguards have issued a warning to take care in the water or risk tragic consequences as many are expected to travel to the seaside during the heatwave.
The warning comes as more than nine fatalities were reported on beaches across the UK in the last ten days. A number of people have also sustained life-changing injuries as a result of water-related incidents.
Ross Greenhill, Coastal Operations area commander at HM Coastguard, told STV News: “Across the whole of the UK we’ve experienced our busiest June and July that we’ve ever seen.
“Our teams last weekend were extremely busy literally running from one incident to another.
“That’s something that we don’t want.
“We don’t want to have to go from one incident to another.
“We want people to be safe, to not need our help but if we do need to be there we will be.”
