A further 47 people have died in Scotland after being diagnosed with coronavirus, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

The official death toll in Scotland stands at 1231, however weekly figures on suspected Covid-19 deaths suggest the most up-to-date total is now more than 1900.

Total confirmed cases of the virus have risen to 10,051 – a jump of 354 in the last 24 hours.

According to management information reported by NHS boards across Scotland, 1748 people have been admitted to hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19. Out of those, 140 patients are in intensive care.

The figures on daily deaths, produced by Health Protection Scotland, only count confirmed cases, while weekly figures from National Records of Scotland include suspected cases.

As of last Sunday, 1616 people have died where Covid-19 was registered on their death certificate.

Health Protection Scotland has reported a further 328 deaths of confirmed cases so far this week, indicating a total death toll of at least 1944.

More than 20,000 people have now died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus across the whole of the UK.

The grim milestone came as the coronavirus lockdown continued into its fifth weekend and the Government faced calls for greater transparency over the scientific advice given to ministers on the outbreak.

On Saturday, the Department of Health said a total of 20,319 patients had died in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 in the UK as of 5pm on Friday – up by 813 from the day before.

That figure does not include deaths in the wider community, such as in care homes, which means the true toll will be higher by several thousand at least.

The UK is the fifth country to pass 20,000 Covid-19 deaths, behind the US, Italy, Spain and France.
