Coronavirus: One death and 490 new cases reported

Scotland has recorded one coronavirus death and 490 cases in the past 24 hours, the latest Scottish Government figures show.

It means the death toll under this daily measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – now stands at 7669.

The daily test positivity rate is 4.2%, up from 3.2% the previous day.

A total of 110 people were in hospital on Sunday with recently confirmed Covid-19, with eight patients in intensive care.

So far, 3,251,138 people have received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination and 2,044,253 have received their second dose.

The latest statistics were reported after health secretary Humza Yousaf said areas of Scotland with rising coronavirus case numbers may not be moved down a level when restrictions are assessed.

Currently, Glasgow is the only part of the country still in level three, whilst the rest of mainland Scotland is in level two.

Level two areas are due to be moved to level one as part of the lockdown easing roadmap on June 7, but Yousaf indicated that it may not be possible to do so in locations where there are concerns over case numbers.

Between May 22 and May 28, there were 3343 new cases of the virus in Scotland, 815 of those in Glasgow. The city has a seven-day case rate of 128.7 new infections per 100,000 of the population.

But the local authority area with the highest transmission rate is now Renfrewshire, with 155.2 cases per 100,000, closely followed by neighbouring East Renfrewshire, which has 149.7 cases per 100,000.
