Coronavirus: One person dies in Scotland with 203 new cases

Another person with coronavirus has died in Scotland while the country saw more than 200 new cases for the fourth day running.

A total of 203 new infections were reported in Scotland overnight, which amount to 4.4% of newly-tested individuals.

That Covid-19 positivity rate is the highest recorded since the Scottish Government began publishing the data in July.

The latest fatality takes the death toll among Scots who died within 28 days of their positive coronavirus test to 2502.

But counting people who died more than 28 days after testing positive, or who were suspected of having Covid without having a test, total deaths involving in the virus in Scotland now stand at 4237.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told Friday’s coronavirus briefing: “This is a reminder that we are again reporting deaths, albeit in small numbers, on a regular basis again.

“That’s an indication that in Scotland, as elsewhere, Covid is accelerating again.”

Of the new cases, 69 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and 29 in Lanarkshire, where a ban on indoor household gatherings is in place in Glasgow City, East and West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and North and South Lanarkshire council areas.

Another 30 new infections are in Lothian, where there are no extra regional restrictions yet, and the other 75 cases are spread across eight mainland health board areas.

There are 61 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up by nine in 24 hours.

Of these patients, five were in intensive care, no change on yesterday.
