First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has met with Greta Thunberg at the COP26 summit in Glasgow.
Thunberg arrived in the city on Saturday evening ahead of the start of the conference.
The Swedish activist was surrounded by police officers and activists as she arrived from London via train.
At the summit venue on Monday, Sturgeon spoke with the 18-year-old, who is expected to take part in demonstrations during her stay in Glasgow.
Following the meeting, Thunberg attended a rally at Festival Park in Govan, just across the River Clyde from the summit venue.
Scotland’s First Minister later tweeted with a message that the voices of young people “must be heard loudly and clearly” at COP26.
She added: “The next few days should not be comfortable for leaders, the responsibility to act must be felt.”
Sturgeon met with Thunberg, as well as climate activist Vanessa Nakate, whilst world leaders and delegates descended on Glasgow.
Following the meeting, the First Minister said: “The voice of young people must be heard at this summit.
“We should not need them to be the conscience of world leaders, but we cannot deny that it is their efforts that have helped to put the climate emergency centre stage.
“Vanessa, Greta and I discussed the importance of world leaders delivering on commitments that will keep the limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, and of the need for the long promised $100bn of climate finance to not just be delivered, but to get to the communities that need it most.
“We also discussed the important issue of loss and damage and the need for this COP to make progress on a mechanism to support countries already feeling the impact of climate change.”
Sturgeon added: “Listening, learning and having open conversations is essential to making progress.
“They rightly challenged me on where Scotland could do more, and how we could influence world leaders at this COP and I look forward to spending further time with Vanessa throughout the summit and the insight, ideas and challenge she will provide throughout, starting later today at the Global Assembly.”
US President Joe Biden touched down on Air Force One in Edinburgh on Monday morning, before travelling to Glasgow.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrived in Glasgow on Sunday evening ahead of greeting world leaders.
