A further 70 people have died in Scotland after being diagnosed with coronavirus.

At Friday’s coronavirus briefing, health secretary Jeane Freeman confirmed the total number of deaths now stands at 6040.

The total number of confirmed cases of the virus has risen to 177,688 – a jump of 1155 in the past 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 337 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 207 in Lanarkshire, and 147 in Lothian.

The daily test positivity rate is 5.8%, up from 5.6% in the previous 24 hours.

There are 1958 people currently in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, a decrease of 25 from Thursday.

Of that number, 144 patients are in intensive care, which is an increase of two.

The health secretary also confirmed that 515,855 people have now received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

Around 96% of care home residents have received the first dose of the vaccine in Scotland, while 68% of people over the age of 80 have also received their first dose.

Freeman said the Scottish Government was “well on track” to hit its vaccination target of all over-80s by “early next week”.

Two more mass vaccination centres will also open in Scotland from Monday, Freeman said, in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
