Humza Yousaf has hit out at the “shameful” abuse being directed towards the UK’s chief medical officers.

Scotland’s health secretary defended Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, as well as Dr Gregor Smith, the chief medical officer for Scotland, describing them as ‘consummate professionals’.

Earlier this year, video emerged of Whitty being subjected to abuse on a London street, with a man holding a camera phone calling him a “liar”.

In June, Whitty was targeted again, with two men seen on video accosting the chief medical officer close to St James’ Park in central London.

In a Tweet, Yousaf praised the work of the CMOs across the UK, saying that they have “worked tirelessly”.

He wrote: “Have seen some of the abuse directed towards Chris Whitty & other CMOs, including our own – shameful.

“They’re consumate professionals who have worked tirelessly to advise Government during the most difficult crisis any of us have ever dealt with.

“They do so with utmost integrity.”
