Hundreds of ScotRail train journeys cancelled amid travel chaos throughout Scotland

Hundreds of train journeys have been cancelled on Sunday as commuters face travel chaos throughout the country.

A total of 303 journeys have been cancelled with ScotRail saying it was not possible to implement a temporary timetable.

The move comes as a wage dispute with driver’s union Aslef continues.

The national rail operator has been running an “emergency timetable” and announced a number of additional services on many of its major routes to combat passenger chaos during the week.

However passengers were warned that there would be no revised timetable on Sunday’s timetable and that it lead to cancellations.

ScotRail said in a tweet: “Unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to implement a temporary timetable for tomorrow. That means the normal Sunday timetable will be in operation and there will be cancellations as a result.

“The complexities of pulling together such widespread changes to timetables means it’s not possible to do it in such a short space of time. We apologise to customers and advise them to check their journeys on our website and app before travelling.”

Aslef prepare to present the newly nationalised firm’s latest pay offer to members following a week of rail disruption in a volatile dispute over pay.

Close to 1,000 journeys have already been scrapped during an impasse over an initial 2.2% wage rise branded “derisory” by the union – however that has since been raised to 4.2%.

Drivers are currently refusing to work overtime or on rest days – leading to a third of daily services being slashed.

It means the final trains on some routes left as early as 6pm during the week, while the Tartan Army has been forced into a nervous wait for a resolution before 50,000 pack into Hampden for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final against Ukraine.
