John McGlynn admits Falkirk first-team coach Stephen McGinn was the first person to cross his mind as a possible replacement for Stephen Robinson following his departure from St Mirren, but revealed there has been no contact between the two clubs.
Craig McLeish was put in interim charge of the Buddies in the wake of Robinson’s move to Aberdeen last week, but McGinn has been linked with the vacant managerial post ahead of St Mirren’s visit to Falkirk in the William Hill Premiership on Saturday.
McGinn, 37, came through the ranks at the Paisley outfit and had two spells as a midfielder and a stint as youth coach.
Falkirk boss McGlynn said: “There’s obviously a connection that Stephen has been there as a player, he’s probably a legend there.
“He went back in a coaching role when he finished playing here, and he obviously knows Craig McLeish very, very well, so you can understand the connection.
“Stephen has not given us any indication that that’s on the agenda or not, we’re just focusing on the next game.
“Because of the connection between the club and his status at that particular club, then it’s easy to put two and two together and come up with whatever, so I can totally understand it.
“That’s the first thing I thought of when Stephen Robinson went away, but there’s been nothing materialised, so there’s no substance to give it a great deal of merit, time, whatever, because there’s not been any contact.
“As far as I’m concerned, we’re going into the game fairly focused on ourselves and preparing for St Mirren.”
With three fixtures remaining before the split, the Bairns are on 43 points, nine ahead of Dundee United and 10 goals better off with a top-half finish within grasp, but McGlynn insists there will be no let-off.
He said: “We still want to go and do the job on Saturday.
“We are nine points clear and 10 goals, and we’ll have opinions on that, but we want to try and get this job done.
“If we get that 45-point marker which we targeted, that’s it done and dusted, and if we win on Saturday, we get to 46.
“We’ve got three games, and we obviously want to get that as soon as possible, regardless of top six, bottom six, or anything.
“And, of course, if we can do that, Hibs are travelling to Motherwell and all of a sudden we’re chasing Hibs.
“We’re only one point behind them if the results go for us at the weekend and we take care of our own job.”
