Lewis Capaldi's surprise gig in New York train station 'almost shut down by police'

The West Lothian singer is playing a sold-out run of shows in America

Lewis Capaldi delighted fans with a surprise pop-up gig at a train station in New York, but was nearly shut down by police.

The West Lothian singer is playing a sold-out run of shows in America, including taking to the stage in the city’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Fans gathered in their numbers at Penn Station as Capaldi played a surprise pop-up show.

According to reports on social media, the show was nearly shut down by the New York Police Department (NYPD) due to the size of the crowd.

A video was shared on social media showing large crowds inside the station as he played his new hit single ‘Stay Love’.

Capaldi was filmed playing the new tune in front of a florist’s stand inside the station.

He responded on Twitter by saying: “NYPD truly met their match in the form of a crowd of mild-mannered ‘middle of the road’ pop music fans” with the hashtag ‘WeRunNY’.

The Scottish singer is due to play a number of festivals in the UK this summer, including TRNSMT in Glasgow on June 21.
