Nine Covid deaths, 6170 new cases and more than 600 in hospital

A further nine deaths and 6170 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Scotland, according to official figures.

A total of 57,279 new tests were carried out, with 11.5% testing positive – down from the 14.9% reported the previously day.

Of the new cases reported on Wednesday, 1741 are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region, 1151 are in Lanarkshire, 987 are in Lothian and 386 are in Fife.

The rest of the cases are spread out across ten other health board areas.

A total of 629 people were in hospital on Tuesday with recently confirmed Covid-19, a rise of 44 overnight. Out of those, 59 patients are in intensive care.

The lab-confirmed death toll of those who tested positive within the previous 28 days currently stands at 8127, however figures including suspected Covid-19 deaths recorded by National Records of Scotland suggest the most up-to-date total is now at least 10,554.

It was also confirmed that 4,108,804 Scots have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, an increase of 2396 from the day before.

A total of 3,691,066 people have received their second dose, a rise of 10,305.

Earlier on Wednesday, National Records of Scotland (NRS) figures showed that the Scottish Borders recorded the highest number of Covid deaths in Scotland in the past week.

Forty-eight fatalities mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered between August 23-29, an increase of seven from the previous week.

Seven of the deaths occurred in the Scottish Borders council area – the largest number in the country.

Six deaths were recorded in Glasgow and five in East Lothian, with 20 council areas registering at least one death.

Of the latest deaths, nine were people were aged under 65, 11 were 65-74, and 28 were 75 or older.

The majority of the deaths took place in hospitals, while seven were in care homes, and five were at home or in a non-institutional setting.
