Police called to break up 300 house parties across weekend

Police were called to break up at least 300 house parties across Scotland this weekend following reports of alleged breaches of coronavirus regulations.

Fourteen people were arrested and at least 101 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued between Friday and Sunday morning.

On three occasions, officers had to force their way into the household.

Police Scotland said the parties are being held “across the country in every community and age group”.

Chief constable Iain Livingstone warned: “There is no doubt that house parties or house gatherings are not permitted and there can be no excuse for arranging, attending, or hosting a house party.

“It is against the law.

“Where officers encounter blatant, wilful, or persistent breaches, we will take decisive action to enforce the law.”

At the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing on Monday, the First Minister said all those attending house parties and “flagrantly” breaking the rules “should really take a look at themselves”.

Nicola Sturgeon stated the restrictions are in place “for the collective wellbeing of people across the country”.

She added: “So, if you found yourself having a gathering against the rules at the weekend, or a house party, then take a long, hard look at yourself because you’re putting yourselves and others at risk right now.”

CC Livingstone thanked the “vast majority” of the public who cooperated with the new 10pm closing time for bars, pubs and restaurants, as well as the increased restrictions on indoor visits to private homes.

Additional officers were deployed to support local authorities with the curfew.

Police reported “very few issues” and no premises were closed.

CC Livingstone said policing is there to support people and help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

He added: “The experience of the last six months is that the great majority of people are taking personal responsibility to do the right thing because they know that at this time physical distancing is the significant intervention that can be made to save lives.

“I am grateful for the support and cooperation of the public and the licensed trade which continued over the weekend.

“I also want to again underline my admiration and compassion for young people and students who have responded so well to the pandemic at this crucial time of their lives.”
