The number of salmon caught in Scotland has fallen to the lowest since records began, according to official statistics.

The reported rod catch of the wild fish last year dropped by 41% compared with 2024.

The government figures show a “pattern of decline” in the numbers of wild salmon returning to Scotland.

Official data for the 2025 season show the total salmon catch by all methods was the lowest since records began in 1952.

In 2025, release rates of salmon captured by rod were the highest on record. Of spring salmon captured by rod, 99% were released; 98% of all rod-caught salmon were released.

Sea trout catches are also near historic lows, with last year’s total the second worst on record.
