ScotRail announces extra trains after crucial Scotland v Ukraine World Cup qualifying clashiStock

Additional trains will now be scheduled following Scotland’s crunch World Cup qualifying play-off clash against Ukraine on Wednesday evening.

The Tartan Army faced missing out on public transport links following Wednesday’s tie at Hampden as the national rail operator remains locked in a bitter dispute with drivers’ union Aslef over pay, resulting in hundreds of services being cancelled.

The national rail operator initially announced there would be no extra services scheduled after the end of the match, but has now U-turned on that decision.

It means the final rail link between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley will now be at 23.45 – rather than the 22.15 service originally planned.

However, should the match go to extra time and/or penalties, it may still be a tense end to the evening for those commuting to Glasgow.

Extra trains between Glasgow Central and satellite stations to Hampden, including King’s Park and Mount Florida, are being added to ensure fans get to the game.

Almost 700 journeys have been scrapped during an impasse over an initial 2.2% wage rise branded “derisory” by Aslef – however that offer has since been raised to 4.2%.

Steve Clarke’s side will face Wales in Cardiff on Sunday should they beat Ukraine for a place at the tournament finals in Qatar later this year.
