ScotRail’s Sunday timetable is likely to be hit with widespread “cancellations” with no temporary replacements as a wage dispute with driver’s union Aslef rages.
The national rail operator announced a number of additional services on many of its major routes to combat passenger chaos during its “emergency timetable”.
Late night trains on lines between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverurie and Edinburgh and Stirling are among those lined up this evening with the final carriages leaving some stations at 11.45pm.
However Sunday’s timetable will be subject to “cancellations” with no revised version in place, passengers were warned.
It comes as drivers’ union Aslef prepare to present the newly nationalised firm’s latest pay offer to members following a week of rail disruption in a volatile dispute over pay.
Almost 700 journeys have been scrapped during an impasse over an initial 2.2% wage rise branded “derisory” by the union – however that has since been raised to 4.2%.
Drivers are currently refusing to work overtime or on rest days – leading to a third of daily services being slashed.
It means the final trains on some routes left as early as 6pm during the week, while the Tartan Army has been forced into a nervous wait for a resolution before 50,000 pack into Hampden for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final against Ukraine.
Passengers have been advised to check their journeys on Sunday in advance of travel.
David Simpson, ScotRail service delivery director, said: “Unfortunately, it has not been possible to publish a temporary timetable for this Sunday. That means the normal timetable will be in operation, however, there will be cancellations as a result.
“The complexities of pulling together such widespread changes to timetables means that it’s not possible to do so in such a short space of time.”
He added: “We apologise to customers and advise them to check their journeys before travel.”
