ScotRail tables offer to unions following 'progressive' talks

A fresh offer has been tabled by ScotRail to rail unions in a bid to end the long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

Talks were held between ScotRail and unions on Tuesday and Thursday this week as part of efforts to strike a deal.

And in a hint that an agreement may be reached, the talks were described by unite as the “most progressive in any of the last 18 months”.

A majority of ScotRail services have been cancelled for several months amidst the ongoing dispute over pay.

Concerns have been raised previously over the potential disruption that could be caused by rail strikes during COP26, which will take place in Glasgow between October 31 and November 12.

Pat McIlvogue, Unite industrial officer, confirmed to STV News that a verbal offer has now been tabled by Abellio ScotRail.

“Unite has met with Abellio Scotrail several times this week around our pay dispute. Talks were the most progressive in any of the last 18 months,” he said.

“Talks have concluded with Abellio Scotrail tabling a verbal offer, which we are still waiting to receive formally.

“Unite will consult our members in a consultative ballot once we receive that offer.

“In the spirit of goodwill, Unite has agreed to suspend our actions short of strike, and strike action on 18 and 19 October.

“All other strike dates afterwards are of course contingent on the ballot result over pay”

A ScotRail spokesperson described the talks with unions as “constructive”, and said the rail operator would continue to work with them to find an agreement on pay and conditions.

RMT also told STV news that it will now be engaging with its representatives on the proposal made by ScotRail.
