People in Scotland are being encouraged to continue to wear a face covering on public transport, despite the legal requirement to do so being dropped.
From Monday, Scots will no longer be legally required to wear a face mask on public transport and in certain indoor public spaces.
The law is being converted into guidance, with the Scottish Government advising people to maintain usage of face masks.
Professor Linda Bauld has also said that those who choose to continue to wear a face covering should be supported in doing so.
So, what is the guidance from transport companies on whether or not to wear a face covering?
ScotRail
David Lister, ScotRail’s director of safety, engineering and sustainability, said: “We recommend customers wear a face covering while travelling on our trains and at stations.
“The safety of our customers and staff is our priority, and we encourage everyone to follow Scottish Government guidance at all stages of their journey.”
SPT
An SPT spokesperson indicated the company echoes the recommendation made by the Scottish Government.
“As we have throughout the pandemic, SPT has followed all Scottish Government advice and guidance,” they said.
“We would echo the Scottish Government recommendation that face coverings continue to be worn where appropriate while recognising this is up to individuals.”
First Bus
A spokesperson stated that the company is encouraging everyone to respect their fellow passengers.
“At First Bus, the health, safety and comfort of our colleagues and customers are always our priority,” they said.
“With that in mind, customers may therefore choose to continue to wear a face covering on board our buses, especially when services are busy.
“We encourage everyone to respect their fellow passengers and look out for one another.
“Together with practical measures such as enhanced cleaning and open windows for ventilation to help maintain safe travel, our customers can plan journeys on the First Bus App, providing live updates on bus capacity and available seating.
Caledonian MacBrayne
Passengers on CalMac ferries have been “strongly recommended” to wear face coverings when they travel.
Customers are also being encouraged to respect the space of others whilst travelling.
