Scottish Terriers 'disappearing' as puppy numbers hit record low

The iconic breed is the closest it has ever been to being classed as 'vulnerable'.

The number of Scottish Terrier puppies born hit the lowest on record last year, according to the Kennel Club.

A total of 387 puppies were born in 2024, which placed the breed on the “At Watch” list.

Three years prior more than 650 newborn Scottish Terriers were welcomed into the world, now the dog is the closest it has ever been to being classed as “vulnerable”.

Some fear the breed is going to be forgotten.

Jane McNiven told STV News: “Scotties are the most loyal, loving, wonderful wee dogs.

“They are a breed known around the world. For that to disappear would be an absolute tragedy.

“These dogs are just as synonymous with Scotland as shortbread and tartan.”

The Kennel Club, which registers all pedigree dogs in the UK, is monitoring potential risk factors that may be causing the decline.
