Stargazers dazzled by colourful Northern Lights display in Scotland's skies

The Aurora Borealis was spotted in the Highlands and Ayrshire.

Stargazers were dazzled by the colourful Northern Lights display over Scotland on Monday night.

The red, green and purple of the Aurora Borealis were spotted by those living in the Highlands and South Ayrshire.

Janice Rodger managed to snap some pictures of the cosmic display from her back door in Skelmorlie while John Gregory spotted it over Tain.

Aurora UK issued a red alert, indicating the phenomenon would be visible to both the naked eye and cameras, during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Northern Lights are caused by solar eruptions known as Coronal Mass Ejections.

The solar particles fire towards the Earth and interact with the atmosphere, resulting in the breathtaking light displays.

According to the Met Office, auroral activity is expected to decline, however, those living in parts of Scotland might still see the Northern Lights.
