Two amber weather warnings for “damaging” strong winds first come into force at 5pm on Friday, lasting until 9pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, two yellow warnings for heavy rain and wind are also in place across the country this weekend.

The amber alert comes into force at 5pm on Friday and remains in effect until just before midnight on Saturday.

The Met Office has warned of potential power cuts, damage to buildings and homes – including roofs being blown off and power lines being brought down, closures of roads, bridges and railway lines, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights, dangerous flying debris and larges waves along coastal areas.

The following areas will be covered:

  • Moray
  • Na h-Eileanan Siar (Outer Hebrides)
  • Highland
  • Orkney Islands
  • Argyll and Bute

A yellow warning for heavy rain is to hit much of the west of the country from noon on Friday until midnight on Saturday.

The Met Office has said there is a chance of power cuts, loss of other services, flooding, delays or cancellations to train and bus services, landslides, difficult driving conditions and road closures.

The following areas will be covered:

  • Falkirk
  • Perth and Kinross
  • Stirling
  • Highland
  • Dumfries and Galloway
  • Argyll and Bute
  • East Ayrshire
  • East Dunbartonshire
  • East Renfrewshire
  • Glasgow
  • Inverclyde
  • North Ayrshire
  • North Lanarkshire
  • Renfrewshire
  • South Ayrshire
  • South Lanarkshire
  • West Dunbartonshire

A yellow wind warning is in place from 3pm until midnight on Saturday, affecting the whole country.

A further amber warning begins at midnight on Saturday until 9pm covering Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Outer Hebrides, the Highlands and Orkney.

Yellow warnings are also in place for wind on Saturday for the whole country, and for rain for much of the west, moved forward to noon.

Flood alerts

SEPA has issued nine flood alerts for Argyll and Bute, Ayrshire and Arran, Central, Dumfries and Galloway, Skye and Lochaber, Tayside, West Central Scotland, Wester Ross and Western Isles.

The public has been warned to expect delays to public transport, spray and flooding on roads, as well as potential power cuts and flooding in homes and businesses.

Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads, and there is a chance that fast-flowing or deep floodwater could result in a danger to life, the Met Office added.
