The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations taking place in Scotland during bank holiday weekend

Scots are gearing up for a four-day bank holiday that will see celebrations across the country to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

The Platinum Jubilee weekend runs from June 2-5 and a mixture of large-scale events and small community gatherings have been planned to mark the occasion.

More than 3,000 beacons are also being lit across the UK and the Commonwealth.

Here are some of the events taking place in Scotland to mark the first time any British monarch has reached the historic milestone.

Edinburgh

Large screens broadcasting the Jubilee celebrations are being placed in Princes Street Gardens. Thousands of people are expected to host picnics and watch the events with Edinburgh Castle as a backdrop. Entertainment is being provided by the Royal Marines and local performers.

There are also events taking place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions is unveiling a giant Jubilee Kaleidosphere that will project profiles of the Queen 70 times.

Musselburgh Racecourse in nearby East Lothian is hosting race meetings on Saturday and Sunday, including ‘The Corgi Derby’.

North-east and Tayside

Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire has a range of events planned.

Ballater Pipe Band will play three performances on Thursday and there will be vintage buses on display on Saturday.

Balmoral is also hoping to stage a photograph involving 70 Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigan Welsh Corgis on its lawn.

Leeds Pipe Band will close the castle’s Jubilee celebrations – playing at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Aden Country Park near Peterhead is hosting a Jubilee picnic on Friday, June 3 and there is a Platinum Jubilee party in Braemar from 11am to 4pm on Sunday featuring live music, pipe bands and children’s games.

The Black Watch Castle and Museum in Perth is throwing a Platinum Jubilee street party from 11am to 5pm on Friday. Guests can enjoy live music from The McAndrews Sisters along with “homemade sausage rolls, sandwiches, Victoria sponge cake and scones with lashings of tea and juice”.

Glasgow and west Scotland

Greenbank Garden in the southside of Glasgow is holding an afternoon tea with live music and lawn games from 10am to 5pm on Saturday.

The event will also feature a craft tent and guests can watch coverage of the BBC’s Platinum Party in the Garden concert on large screens.

A beacon lighting ceremony is taking place at Paisley Abbey. The event will begin with a town crier reading the proclamation at 2pm on Thursday, June 2 on Paisley High Street.

In other events, Bellshill Central Parish Church has organised a concert from 2-3pm on Saturday and Summerlee Museum of Industrial Life in nearby Coatbridge is hosting numerous events over the four-day weekend, including 1950s street games, a vintage car display and a performance by organist Aaron Hawthorne.

Borders

A community parade and picnic is taking place in Selkirk from 2-5pm on Saturday. Hosted by Selkirk Rugby Club, the bar will be open and there will be music and children’s entertainment.

Meanwhile, in Lauder there is a Dachshund Fun Day at Thirlestane Castle.
