Thunderstorms and heavy downpours to batter Scotland as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

Thunderstorms and heavy downpours are set to batter Scotland as a yellow weather warning comes into force.

The Met Office issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms which will come into force on Monday from 1pm until 9pm.

Outbreaks of heavy rain will move southwards, affecting parts of Argyll and Bute, Stirling, Glasgow, Perth and Kinross and parts of Lanarkshire and Ayrshire on Monday afternoon.

The affected areas may see 20 to 40mm of rain fall within an hour or two.

The Met Office warned that the downpours could cause travel disruption including difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

They added that there is a “small chance” that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds also possible.

“There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life,” the Met Office warning said.

On Sunday we saw some quite beefy showers across the north east with quite a bit of thundery activity. Videos online showed some severe flooding in Auchleven, and some independent weather stations were reporting 77mm and 88mm of rainfall in the space of three hours between 2.30pm and 5.30pm (Source: @RoostWeather on Twitter)

We continue to see outbreaks of heavy rain throughout Monday moving southwards, affecting parts of Argyll and Bute, Stirling, Glasgow, Perth and Kinross and parts of Lanarkshire and Ayrshire this afternoon. Again these will be quite thundery at times, which has prompted the Met Office to issue a thunderstorm warning – coming into effect at 1pm and lasting until 9pm tonight.

This evening the showers begin to push southwards then tend to fizzle out, with things turning more settled into the early hours and dry for most. We’ll hold onto a lot of cloud however meaning another mild night to come.

For the rest of the week, high pressure dominates tomorrow, but by Wednesday we will see another band of rain moving in from the west. Early signals show that Thursday and Friday look settled, dry with blue skies come Friday.
