Where and when Scottish school strikes will happen in my area

Schools across Scotland are set to close for three days as staff strike over pay.

Thousands of janitors, cleaners, caterers, classroom assistants and administrative staff will walk out in the last week of September.

Most primary and secondary schools in Scotland could face closures from Tuesday, September 26 to Thursday, September 28.

A new pay offer was tabled by Scotland’s local council body COSLA on Thursday, September 21.

But it has been rejected by the largest union, Unison, which described it as “too little, too late”.

Unite and GMB announced on Friday they would be suspending strike action as they recommend their members accept the latest offer.

Unite members will no longer take industrial next week.

Members had initially planned to strike in Clackmannanshire, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Dundee, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Fife, Glasgow City, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, and Orkney.

GMB members will also pause walkouts in Aberdeen, Clackmannanshire, Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, Dundee, East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk, Glasgow, Orkney, Renfrewshire and South Ayrshire.

Unison’s strike action will still go ahead and will affect schools across 24 councils.

And the locations impacted by Unison’s planned strike action are Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Clackmannanshire, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Dundee, Dumfries and Galloway, East Dunbartonshire; East Renfrewshire, Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow, Highland, Inverclyde, Moray, North Ayrshire, Orkney, Perth and Kinross, Renfrewshire, Shetland, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Stirling, and West Dunbartonshire.

STV News asked each council about the strikes in their areas.

Aberdeen

Aberdeen City Council said it is “highly likely” that schools and childcare centres will be forced to return to remote learning over the three-day strike.

Parents and carers should receive letters with the full details of closures, officials said.

Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire Council said it is hoping to keep as many schools open as possible. It said strikes will affect each school differently and head teachers will let parents know whether their school will remain open.

Angus

Schools and early years centres across Angus will be impacted by strikes on September 26, 26 and 28.

All secondary schools in the area will be shut, the council said.

Clackmannanshire

A spokesperson for Clackmannanshire Council said: “We have made arrangements in light of the industrial action on September 26, 27 and 28 whereby a small number of establishments will remain open.

“All schools and early learning centres have contacted families directly to share details of these arrangements.”

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar

Dumfries and Galloway

Dundee

All Dundee primary, special and secondary schools will be closed to pupils for the three days of industrial action.

However, seven nurseries in the city will remain open, with the full list available here.

East Dunbartonshire

East Dunbartonshire will be impacted by strikes.

As a result, all primary, secondary and ASN schools will be closed.

All East Dunbartonshire early years centres will also be closed – with the exception of Auchinairn, Cleddens and Oakburn.

East Renfrewshire

Edinburgh

All schools and nurseries in Edinburgh will close due to strikes from Tuesday.

Fife

All schools in Fife will close with the following services impacted: primary school, secondary schools, special schools, nurseries, early learning and family nurture centres, additional support needs units, childcare services and pupil support services.

All services should return to normal by Friday.

Glasgow

All nurseries, primaries, secondaries and additional support for learning (ASL) schools will be closed on September 26, 27 and 28.

Highland

“The council’s intention is that schools will remain open to pupils and staff on strike days where it is safe to do so unless otherwise notified,” a spokesperson said.

“Letters have been sent to all Highland schools to inform them of the decision for their setting to remain open or closed.

“It is expected that 27 schools will remain open. It is anticipated that there will be significantly reduced numbers of support staff in the remaining early learning and childcare, primary and secondary schools across Highland.

“The safe supervision of children and young people is of the utmost importance and therefore the decision has been taken to close all other schools, as notified by letter, to pupils.”

Inverclyde

All council-run nurseries and schools in Inverclyde will be closed for the three-day strike except a small number of standalone family centres who staff were not balloted.

Moray

It’s likely some nurseries and schools in the area will be forced to close. Headteachers will alert parents which schools are affected nearer the time, the council said.

Remote learning will be in place for schools affected.

North Ayrshire

North Ayrshire Council confirmed schools in the area will be closing for the three-day strike.

North Lanarkshire

Schools in North Lanarkshire will open as normal after Unite cancelled their planned strikes.

Orkney

The planned strikes will have a “significant” effect on Orkney, the council said.

Most schools will remain closed throughout the week.

Perth and Kinross

Some 28 primaries and five secondary schools will be opened to pupils during the strikes but all others will be closed.

Remote learning will be in effect for pupils not able to attend school in person.

Renfrewshire

A large number of schools across Renfrewshire will be closed for strike action from Tuesday, September 26 with services returning to normal by the Friday.

Shetland

The majority of schools in Shetland will be closed to pupils over the three-day strike.

The council said parents and carers will be contacted with more details.

South Ayrshire

All schools and early learning centres in South Ayrshire will close for three days from Tuesday.

“We understand the impact this late notice will have on parent’s and carer’s childcare arrangements,” the council said.

“Unfortunately, this change in the availability of staff on the days of industrial action is outwith our control.”

South Lanarkshire

All schools in South Lanarkshire will be closed from September 26 to September 28.

Stirling

Stirling will be impacted by the industrial action from Unison members from Tuesday.

The council said some schools and nurseries will remain open and that parents and guardians will be contacted directly with more details.

West Dunbartonshire

If no pay deal has been reached in advance of the strike dates all West Dunbartonshire schools, including Additional Support Needs schools and Early Learning and Childcare Centres (ELCCs), will be closed to pupils, the council said.

It added that a small number of ELCCs will remain open.
